Ready to Try a Fireplace Remodel?
A fireplace remodel is not the easiest home improvement project, but is isn’t as aggressive as a room addition/remodel either. If you have the drive to get your hands wet and cut wood and lay some tile, this might be the project for you.
Many older fireplaces are made from brick. It is usually a “nice” brick from back in the day, but I have seen fireplaces made from cinder block that were screaming for a fireplace major remodel.
A great way to remodel brick fireplace facade is to apply “backer board” and create a whole new face for the fireplace. A popular choice is tile. You can use large 12″ italian marble and add a pre-fabricated wooden mantle and trust me, it will change the whole atmosphere of your living room.
More remodel ideas for fireplaces include leaving the area just around the fireplace opening in the existing brick, and then cover the rest of the fireplace with nice stained or painted wood with molding accents.
You can also camouflage a floor-to-ceiling fireplace by covering the top half with drywall and adding a pre-fab mantle at the correct height.
There are a lot of great things you can do to update your fireplace. It is an ambitious project, but you CAN do it yourself, if you decide not to seek the help of a professional.
